In Geonic days, the yeshiva [ישיבה] was akin to modern universities. The word is somewhat disreputable today, since it is associated with fervently Orthodox communities who prefer to isolate from the larger Jewish community, including modern Orthodox ones.
The traditional Jewish academy trains Jewish scholars; it does not intend to separate Jews from mundane concerns. Using it for this purpose is a modern Israeli innovation. Many fervently traditional learners in Israeli yeshivot now understand they are ill-equipped for the modern economy without secular education. They are complaining and changing the system.
