Sefer Hamitzvot 8

8 Emulate G!dly ways

This follows from the hard lesson I learned all those years ago. Rambam’s Hebrew offers some interesting ideas…

להדמוֹת

Resemblance is the most basic idea presented here, but variations connote stillness, quiet, silence, tranquility. The most chilling use of this word, I think, occurs in Sedra Shmini. Aharon’s sons Nadav and Avihu both die during the public inauguration of the Tabernacle. Aharon, we are told, “was still.” When there is no way to convey emotion the only remedy is silence.

Reb Arie

A chaplain, spiritual director, and educator, Arié Chark (“Reb Arie”) is Rector at The Metivta of Ottawa. A strong sense of personal mission has led Reb Arie to convene various civil society projects under the auspices of The Metivta of Ottawa, including the Ottawa Roundtable and the Abrahamic Chaplaincy Board.
