10 To learn from Shma each morning and evening
The Shma collects 20 verses from three Torah segments. Each segment is called a pereq:
III | II | I | |
Dvarim 11:13-21 | Bamidbar 15:37-41 | Dvarim 6:4-9 |
Rambam’s mitzva quotes Pereq I of Shma.
וְשִׁנַּנְתָּ֣ם לְבָנֶ֔יךָ וְדִבַּרְתָּ֖ בָּ֑ם בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ֤ בְּבֵיתֶ֨ךָ֙ וּבְלֶכְתְּךָ֣ בַדֶּ֔רֶךְ וּֽבְשָׁכְבְּךָ֖ וּבְקוּמֶֽךָ
Teach them! Teach your children: speak to them in your settlements, in your houses, when wandering on the path. Sleep to this teaching. Awaken with it.
He derives two mitzvot. The mitzva here is derived from the phrase …
וְדִבַּרְתָּ֖ בָּ֑ם
This is difficult to state in English. The Hebrew verb defines several actions, all of which convey importance, even urgency:
Command | Speak | Word | Matter |
