Sefer Hamitzvot 4

4 Acknowledge awe in the presence of Divinity

You can certainly command fear: do something that makes people afraid and they will fear you. Translation remains part of the problem. The Hebrew …

לְיִרְאָה מִמֶּנּוּ

is based on the infinte form of the verb, but which verb? The English verbs I have listed are …

To revere | To venerate | To honour | To perceive | To understand

The mitzva of לְיִרְאָה מִמֶּנּוּ is not a mitzva to fear G!d. It is a mitzva to revere, to venerate, to honour, to perceive, to understand — but more than anything it is a mitzva to feel awe when in G!d’s Presence.

The correct Hebrew word for fear in this context is פחד — which more correctly means dread.
